Job summary

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) seeks an Automation Engineer to develop and deliver complex automation and robotics projects in MED. You will contribute hands-on programming of PLCs, HMIs, machine vision, sensors, and robotic cells, while supporting safety-compliant systems and electromechanical builds.

This role is on-site in LLNL's Engineering Directorate. You will work with multidisciplinary teams, manage data analysis and reporting, and collaborate with vendors to ensure safe

Qualifications

• U.S. citizenship required for DOE Q clearance.
• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, software engineering, mechatronics, or related field, or equivalent experience.
• Experience deploying automation systems in manufacturing or related industries.
• Experience programming industrial PLCs and robot arms (KUKA, FANUC, UR).
• Experience with CAD and design software.
• Experience building closed-loop control systems.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills.
• Commitment to safety and timely project delivery.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, commission, and troubleshoot automation and mechatronics projects.
• Program PLCs, HMIs, machine vision, sensors, actuators, and robot systems.
• Organize, analyze, and present data from research in reports and presentations.
• Collaborate with internal and external groups at LLNL and other institutions.
• Conduct research and analysis to address defined problems.
• Work with vendors and internal teams to ensure safe, compliant project execution.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
