Job summary

BluePearl Pet Hospital is seeking an extraordinary Oncology Veterinary Technician to join our team in a fast-paced oncology service. The role encompasses patient care, clinician support, and client communication with emphasis on chemotherapy administration and monitoring.

Ideal candidates have at least two years of specialty veterinary hospital experience, strong communication skills, and the ability to multi-task.

Qualifications

• Minimum two years of experience in a specialty veterinary hospital.
• Strong communication and client interaction skills.
• Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced oncology setting.

Responsibilities

• Perform physical exam; count heart rate, pulse, capillary refill, membranes, temperature, respiratory rate and effort.
• Understand normal vital and lab parameters and alert doctor when abnormal.
• Perform phlebotomy.
• Place peripheral IV catheter in cephalic vein.
• Calculate basic medical math.
• Set up materials for chemotherapy administration.
• Safely dispense and administer oral chemotherapy agents.
• Safely dispense, reconstitute and administer SC/IM chemotherapy agents.
• Check chemotherapy agent calculations and dosages.
• Properly shave and wrap for IV catheter for chemotherapy infusion.
• Know chemotherapy extravasation and actions if it happens.
• Admit oncology patients and obtain history including meds, response, side effects.
• Discharge oncology patients with basic client education on home care.
• Maintain knowledge of common veterinary terms and communicate with peers.
• Address client concerns during visits or after hospitalization.
• Know tumor types and oncology terminology in workup protocols.
• Understand anesthesia/monitoring equipment; assist with ASA I or II patients.
• Remain current on RECOVER CPR guidelines and perform designated duties.
• Maintain hospital day-to-day operations (stocking, cleaning, etc.).
