Job summary

State of South Carolina is seeking an Oncology Data Specialist to identify non-registry data sources, perform casefinding, and manage data workflows with WebPlus, REDCap, and Tableau reporting. The role supports certification and adherence to NPCR/NAACCR standards.

Responsibilities include coordinating follow-back activities, conducting quality control studies, and preparing monthly communications for state registrars. A bachelor’s degree and ODS credentials are required.

Under general supervision of the Data Collection Manager, identifies non-registry and non-hospital data sources in the SC Central Cancer Registry (SCCCR). Performs case finding, data collection and follow-back at these facilities according to standards set by the CDC, National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR) and North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR). Data collection support includes managing all WebPlus exports, REDCap data workflows and Tableau reporting.

  • Identifies all reportable new cancer cases (Casefinding) from assigned facilities including: non-registry hospitals, independent laboratories, freestanding treatment centers, and appropriate physician offices. Abstracts all reportable patient records that meet criteria for inclusion into the SCCCR according to national standards set by NPCR and NAACCR as needed to maintain certification for Oncology Data Specialist (ODS).
  • Coordinates follow-back activities in physician offices and other assigned reporting facilities to complete patient information as assigned.
  • Manages all WebPlus exports, REDCap data workflows and Tableau reporting.
  • Responsible for monthly newsletter sent to state registrars.
  • Conducts quality control studies as assigned. Includes visual review audits, edit reconciliation, and demographic information updates.
  • Completes other duties as assigned related to the position.
Minimum And Additional Requirements
State Minimum Requirements

A bachelor's degree and relevant program experience.

Institutions of Higher Learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

Agency Additional Requirements

Must have current Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) credentials. Experience in lieu of degree will be considered.

Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered in meeting the minimum qualifications, subject to approval by the SCDPH Chief Human Resources Officer, or their delegate.
