Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Cancer Center Oncology Data Supervisor, the Oncology Data Specialist- Certified (ODS-C) is responsible for the collection, management, and analysis of data on persons with a diagnosis of malignant or neoplastic (cancer). The specialist analyzes complex patient cancer data, abstracts, codes, and reports cancer statistics. They must ensure accuracy, consistency, completeness, and quality of the cancer data abstracted for use in cancer control, survival, epidemiological research, public health program planning, and patient care improvement.
The ODS-C uses recognized cancer disease coding classifications (ICD-O, etc.), staging conventions, and methodologies. They identify, code, stage, and collect treatment and survival information for each patient, using SEER ICD-10 case-finding codes and standard techniques. They must understand disease morphology, staging criteria, treatment modalities, and evidence-based NCCN guidelines to accurately abstract each patient record. The ODS also participates in quality improvement activities related to coding accuracy, data quality, and integrity, and identifies issues in code sequencing. They are responsible for maintaining the Cancer Registry according to the standards of the New Jersey State Cancer Registry (NJSCR), American College of Surgeons, Commission on Cancer (ACoS/CoC), NAPBC, and NAPRC accreditation standards.
