The role you’ll contribute:

The Oncology Data Specialist Certified is responsible for improving quality and outcomes for the Cancer Institute across the Central Florida Division. The ODS-C completes case finding, abstracting, longitudinal patient follow-up, and additional activities to meet standards set by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (ACoS CoC) and the Florida Cancer Data Systems (FCDS). The ODS-C ensures all clinical elements accurately reflect the care provided by AdventHealth for accurate reporting to state, federal, and public agencies. The ODS-C serves as the Cancer Registry content expert, reviewing patient diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes across the care continuum, and alerts leadership to discrepancies or care variations for performance improvement. The role requires ongoing education to stay current with changes in coding and compliance in the cancer industry.

  • Serve as the Cancer Registry content expert, responsible for identifying potential cancer registry candidates in compliance with standards and abstracting rules set by federal, state, and national accrediting bodies.
  • Accurately abstract and clinically code patient data using appropriate classification and staging systems, NCCN guidelines, and other reference manuals for all cancer patients diagnosed and/or treated at AdventHealth facilities.
  • Identify clinical variability or documentation discrepancies, escalate trends to leadership for intervention, and provide feedback to clinicians.
  • Use critical thinking and independent judgment to categorize data elements and outcomes, making clinical inferences when needed to ensure accuracy.
  • Track cancer patients longitudinally throughout the care continuum at required intervals to maintain follow-up and meet regulatory deadlines, utilizing multiple sources for follow-up.
  • Maintain a professional environment conducive to accuracy and productivity, validate abstractions prior to submission, and manage multiple priorities to meet deadlines.
  • Seek opportunities for professional development, attend educational and registry conferences, and stay updated on industry developments.
  • Participate in Quality Assurance peer reviews, correcting abstractions based on feedback to meet registry guidelines.
  • Contribute to special projects or initiatives aimed at improving patient outcomes in the Cancer Institute.

Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree in Healthcare or Health Information Management
  • Completion of education and/or work experience required for Oncology Data Specialist Certified by the National Cancer Registrars’ Association
  • Two or more years of cancer registry abstraction experience
  • Current and valid Oncology Data Specialist certification
  • Strong understanding of complex medical conditions and surgical procedures to assess quality and outcomes of cancer care
  • Ability to make independent clinical judgments considering various internal and external variables
  • Thorough understanding of Quality Measures as specified by the Commission on Cancer
  • Knowledge of resource references and utilization as per the Florida Cancer Data System (FCDS) Data Acquisition Manual

Preferred qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Healthcare or Health Information Management
  • Experience in a CoC-approved Cancer Program with at least two years of abstraction experience
  • Experience in a quaternary care hospital system
  • Experience working in a multi-campus healthcare system
  • Knowledge of EMRs such as CRStar, Cerner, ARIA, OncoEMR
