Job summary

Caterpillar Inc. is seeking a MineStar Onboard Engineer to serve as the on-site technical expert for MineStar Command for Hauling. You will maximize uptime of autonomous haul trucks and partner with customer maintenance teams, engineers, and dealers to solve complex equipment challenges in a large-scale mining setting.

The role involves hands-on problem solving, root-cause investigations, and collaboration with global teams while ensuring performance improvements and field readiness.

Qualifications

• Experience with large mobile mining equipment and autonomous systems.
• Strong troubleshooting, reliability engineering, and root-cause analysis.
• Ability to interpret drawings and machine health data to resolve issues.

Responsibilities

• Own onboard hardware health and fleet availability for MineStar Command-equipped autonomous haul trucks.
• Analyze machine performance, reliability trends, and failure data to identify uptime opportunities.
• Support integration of onboard mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and autonomous control systems.
• Lead root-cause investigations with cross-functional teams.
• Interpret health data and fault codes to develop practical performance improvements.
• Provide technical guidance to maintenance and operations personnel on best practices.
• Present findings to customer stakeholders and Caterpillar leadership.
• Collaborate with engineering teams to validate product improvements and field tests.

As a MineStar Onboard Engineer, you'll serve as the on-site technical expert supporting Cat® MineStar™ Command for Hauling, helping customers maximize the performance, reliability, and availability of autonomous mining equipment. You'll work at the intersection of mining, engineering, and cutting-edge autonomy technology, partnering with customer maintenance teams, Caterpillar engineers, and dealers to solve complex equipment challenges and drive continuous improvement. This is an excellent opportunity for Mechanical or Electrical Engineers who enjoy hands-on problem solving, troubleshooting advanced systems, analyzing equipment performance, and seeing the direct impact of their work in a large-scale mining operation.

What You'll Do

• Own onboard hardware health and fleet availability for MineStar Command-equipped autonomous haul trucks.
• Analyze machine performance, equipment reliability, and failure trends to identify opportunities for increased uptime and productivity.
• Support the integration of onboard mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and autonomous control systems.
• Lead root‑cause investigations for equipment and system issues, working closely with engineering, product support, dealer, and customer teams.
• Interpret machine health data, fault codes, and operational trends to develop practical solutions and performance improvements.
• Provide technical guidance to maintenance and operations personnel on equipment best practices and system optimization.
• Present technical findings and recommendations to customer stakeholders, maintenance teams, and Caterpillar leadership.
• Collaborate with Caterpillar engineering teams to validate product improvements and support field testing initiatives.

What Skills You Will Have

Technical Excellence: Experience working with large mobile mining equipment, heavy machinery, autonomous systems, hydraulic systems, powertrain components, or machine controls.

Problem Solving: Strong understanding of equipment troubleshooting, reliability engineering, root‑cause analysis, and failure investigation. Experience interpreting engineering drawings, schematics, maintenance data, and machine health information to resolve complex equipment issues.

Field Support: Ability to work effectively in a mining or industrial environment while supporting cross‑functional teams. Experience evaluating equipment performance and implementing solutions that improve reliability, availability, and maintainability.

Effective Communications: Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to translate technical issues into practical recommendations for customers, technicians, and engineering teams.

Top Candidates Will Also Have

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Mining Engineering, or a related discipline.

Familiarity with autonomous mining technologies, fleet management systems, or Cat MineStar solutions.

What Training Looks Like

You’ll receive structured onboarding and product training on MineStar onboard networks/machine control systems and troubleshooting. Training is tailored and may include classroom learning, on-the-job development, and mentoring.

Additional Information

The position is based in Phoenix, Arizona, and requires 30- 50% travel to support roster work.

Summary Pay Range

$112,710.00 - $169,060.00
