Job summary

National Railroad Safety Services, Inc. (NRSS) is seeking an Employee in Charge to provide essential on-track safety services for freight railroads, transit systems, state DOTs, and rail industry partners in Burlington, VT.

The role focuses on maintaining safety across all on-track activities and coordinating with dispatchers and train crews. Travel is a significant part of the job (50% to 85%), with a base compensation of $28–$37 per hour based on experience.

Qualifications

• Proficient with tablets, smartphones, and communication tools to coordinate train movements.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Detail-oriented with strong organizational abilities.
• Willingness to travel for extended periods, sometimes months.
• Must have a valid driver's license.
• Requires a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum of 2 years' railroad experience, preferably in maintenance of way.
• Ability to successfully complete required training.

Responsibilities

• Provide On-Track Safety measures such as setting up derails, track signs, and safety tools.
• Prepare daily field reports and document any rule violations.
• Coordinate job-site activities and tasks.
• Maintain radio contact with Dispatchers and Train Crews to communicate safety status.
• Conduct mandatory, clear, and thorough job briefings with all crew members before entry to track.
• Enforce Railroad, State, and Federal policies.
