Job summary

The University of Maine System seeks an IP Associate to support IP evaluation, prosecution, maintenance, and technology transfer within the Technology Business Development – Intellectual Property team. You will collaborate across offices to move innovations toward practical use, manage filings, and support sponsored research collaborations.

This 100% in-person role can be based at the Orono campus with Portland travel as needed; salary is up to $98,000 depending on qualifications and experience.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant technical field such as engineering, materials science, chemistry, biochemistry, or a closely related discipline.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in technology development or technology transfer, including at least 2 years in patent prosecution.
• Experience with prior art searches and freedom-to-operate analyses.
• Experience with USPTO and international patent systems, including PCT filings, post-grant proceedings.

Responsibilities

• IP evaluation, prosecution, and maintenance; technology marketing; support for collaborative and sponsored research.
• Move innovations from UMaine/UMS into practical use and contribute to economic development initiatives.
• Work independently and with cross-functional teams to advance IP projects.
• Build and maintain relationships with internal and external partners and stakeholders.
