Job summary

Motion is seeking a skilled machinist to set up, operate, and adjust conventional or automatic machines, producing parts per drawings with tight tolerances. The position involves fabricating parts for repairs, prototypes, and experimental equipment, with over half the time spent at customer locations.

Candidates should have a high school diploma or GED and 3–5 years of machining experience, plus familiarity with CAD/CAM software and precision measurement tools such as micrometers and calipers.

Summary

Under general supervision, sets up, operates, and adjusts various types of conventional or automatic machines including lathes, drill presses, grinders, and other precision equipment. Works from drawings and written instructions to create replacement and new parts in making repairs to metal parts as well as for experimental apparatus or prototype equipment. Work can be complex at times and machining is performed to moderate tolerances. This position works more than 50% of the time at the customer location.

Job Duties

• Machines parts to specifications, using machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, shapers or grinders. Sets up, adjusts or operates basic or specialized machine tools used to perform precision machining operations.
• Measures, examines or tests completed units to check for defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments such as micrometers. Calculates dimensions or tolerances, using instruments such as micrometers or Vernier calipers.
• Monitors the feed and speed of machines during the machining process. Maintains machine tools in proper operational condition. Operates equipment to verify operational efficiency.
• Studies sample parts, blueprints, drawings or engineering information to determine methods or sequences of operations needed to fabricate products.
• Programs computers or electronic instruments, such as numerically controlled machine tools. Diagnoses machine tool malfunctions to determine need for adjustments or repairs.
• Lays out, measures and marks metal stock to display placement of cuts. Fits and assembles parts to make or repair machine tools. Sets up or operates metalworking, brazing, heat‑treating, welding or cutting equipment.
• Installs repaired parts into equipment or installs new equipment. Checks work pieces to ensure that they are properly lubricated or cooled.
• Designs fixtures, tooling or experimental parts to meet special engineering needs.
• Supports metalworking projects from planning and fabrication through assembly, inspection, and testing, using knowledge of machine functions, metal properties and mathematics. Prepares working sketches for the illustration of product appearance.
• Tests experimental models under simulated operating conditions for purposes such as development, standardization or feasibility of design. Installs experimental parts or assemblies, such as hydraulic systems, electrical wiring, lubricants or batteries into machines or mechanisms.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience

• Typically requires a high school diploma or GED and three (3) to five (5) years of experience or an equivalent combination.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

• Knowledge of various metals and measurements used in machining processes.
• Knowledge of machinist, CAD and/or CAM software.
• Knowledge of mathematics and its application.
• Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.
• Knowledge of monitoring gauges, dials or other indicators to ensure a machine is working properly.
• Ability to safely use Acer and Proto Track mills to make more complex parts.
• Capable of independently fabricating parts out of sheet metal and Lexan.

Physical Demands

• Requires manual dexterity, arm‑hand steadiness, and multi‑limb coordination. Ability to lift 50 pounds or more and stand for extended periods of time.
