Job summary

Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens, Inc. seeks a Handyperson to join the on-site maintenance team in its housing program.

You will perform routine repairs, assist with cleaning and safety readiness, and help prepare vacant units for rental, working closely with the Superintendent and facilities staff. Responsibilities include documenting service requests, maintaining mechanical systems, and providing back-up coverage for other POP facilities.

Qualifications

• High School or GED preferred, but may be waived for 2 years related experience.
• Experience with cleaning and repair equipment, including vacuum/shop vac, floor machines, snow blower and yard & landscaping equipment.
• Basic knowledge of carpentry, electricity and plumbing.
• Adequate knowledge of boilers, electrical machinery, elevators, HVAC and fire pump & standpipe/sprinkler systems.
• Ability to read, write, and speak in English.
• Certificate of Fitness from the FDNY as appropriate to the work site is required within 6 months of hire.
• Bilingual preferred (Spanish, Korean, Chinese, Russian).
• Ability to lift, carry, push, and/or pull weight up to 50 lbs.
• Flexible hours including weekends/evenings/holidays for a 24/7 program.
• Able to mop, sweep, climb ladders, and use basic tools.

Responsibilities

• Work closely with the Superintendent to ensure optimum maintenance of the property.
• Complete routine repairs in the building and document on a Service Request Order.
• Work with Superintendent, vendors, contractors, and monitoring of mechanical systems.
• Perform cleaning tasks and follow trash removal guidelines.
• Participate in regular floor care and prepare vacant units for rental.
• Remove snow and ice in a timely manner.
• Monitor maintenance/janitorial inventories and safe use of supplies and equipment.
• Provide back-up coverage to other POP managed facilities.
