Job summary

Epia Neuro is seeking a Firmware Engineer II to design, implement, and test embedded firmware for implantable neural interfaces and external devices. You will work across the full firmware lifecycle, from hardware bring-up to verification, in a regulated medical-device environment.

The role emphasizes hands-on development, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and rigorous testing with regulators in mind. Alameda, CA on-site role with strong engineering culture.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in CS/EE or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 2+ years of professional experience developing embedded firmware or embedded software.
• Strong proficiency in C/C++ for microcontroller-based embedded systems.
• Experience with microcontrollers (e.g., ARM Cortex-M) and peripherals (UART, SPI, I2C).
• Experience with Python for scripting, automation, or testing of embedded devices.
• Experience debugging embedded systems with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and hardware debuggers.
• Ability to read schematics and understand basic electronics.
• Familiarity with RTOS and embedded software design principles.
• Experience using Git and collaborative software development.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and maintain embedded firmware for implantable and external medical devices.
• Develop device drivers, interfaces, and application-level firmware for microcontroller-based systems.
• Implement firmware features involving hardware peripherals, RTOS, and communication protocols.
• Develop Python scripts to interface with embedded devices for testing and debugging.
• Participate in design discussions and code reviews to improve quality and maintainability.
• Support hardware bring-up and firmware integration for embedded systems.
• Debug firmware issues using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and debuggers.
• Develop and execute unit and integration tests; ensure traceability in a regulated environment.
• Collaborate with hardware, software, and research teams to integrate firmware with the medical-device system.
• Document firmware designs, interfaces, tests, and verification results as part of quality/regulatory activities.
