Job summary

The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking temporary Snow Removal Operators for the 2026/2027 season. Duties include operating CDL vehicles, assisting in snow/ice control, and maintaining equipment and facilities.

This is a non-benefit, on-call, part-time hourly position with multiple yard locations across Illinois. Headquarters in Hamel, IL with a hybrid-like on-site schedule; candidates must meet CDL requirements and be able to work under harsh winter conditions.

Qualifications

• Requires completion of four years of high school or equivalent.
• For seasonal employees only, possession of a Class B CDL with endorsements X or N and no airbrake restrictions is acceptable for two years; at year three, a Class A CDL with endorsements X or N is required.
• Requires one year of driving experience immediately preceding appointment, with a clean driving record.

Responsibilities

• Operates CDL Class A or B licensed vehicles.
• Assists in emergency snow and ice control.
• Serves in servicing and minor repairs of equipment such as trucks, snowplows, salt spreaders, and related gear.
• Performs routine ground maintenance and housekeeping at the headquarters.
• Completes other duties as assigned within the scope of responsibilities.
