Job summary

Northwestern Medicine is seeking on-call Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs) for our West Region, supporting hospitals: Central DuPage, Delnor, Kishwaukee, and Valley West. The SANE provides specialized, trauma-informed medical forensic care to patients following sexual assault and may perform exams, evidence collection, counseling, and referrals for follow-up care.

The role requires nursing licensure in Illinois, completion of IL SANE training within 1 year of hire, and IAFN 40-hour didactic

Qualifications

• BSN or ADN with commitment to obtain BSN within three years of first day of employment in clinical nurse role OR Master’s degree from an accredited school/college of nursing and Advance Practice Registered Nurse (IL) license.
• Current Illinois Licensure as a Registered Nurse in good standing
• BLS certification upon hire
• Completion of IL SANE Clinical Training Program within 1 year of hire
• Completion of an International Association of Forensic Nursing (IAFN) approved 40-hour didactic class
• Completion of the IL SANE Clinical Training Log

Responsibilities

• Acts autonomously following professional standards outlined by SASETA and Illinois Nurse Practice Act.
• Works collaboratively with interdisciplinary team to facilitate care of sexual assault survivors.
• Maintains documentation standards and confidentiality per policy.
• Maintains chain of custody for evidence collected.
• Stays up to date with regulatory guidelines for SANE practice.
• Educates survivors and families to meet emotional and healthcare needs.
• Performs assignments safely and reports unsafe conditions.
• Testifies in court as a fact witness and assists SANEs in court preparation.
