Job summary

MESD Outdoor School in Portland, Oregon seeks an On-Call Program Instructor for a seasonal residential program. You will co-teach science lessons, mentor student leaders, and foster an inclusive, safe learning environment on weeklong sessions Tuesday–Friday.

Responsibilities include hiking, activities, evening programs, and collaboration with classroom teachers. Prior MESD Outdoor School experience is preferred, with flexible attendance and reliability a must.

Qualifications

  • Experience in outdoor education or related youth development fields.
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality.
  • Ability to travel between MESD and Outdoor School sites.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Strong commitment to youth development and student-centered practices.
  • Clear, respectful communication and collaboration skills.
  • Flexibility and responsiveness to changing program needs.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Commitment to equity and creating respectful, culturally responsive learning environments.

Responsibilities

  • Actively supervise groups of 6th-grade students in structured and unstructured settings.
  • Assist with meal supervision and food service responsibilities.
  • Collaborate with site supervisors and partner organizations to maintain a positive learning environment.
  • Communicate professionally with students, staff, and partners.
  • Model professionalism and inclusive, student-centered behavior.
  • Adhere to MESD policies and Outdoor School procedures for safety.
  • Support the full program schedule, including instruction and activities.
  • Mentor high school Student Leader volunteers and provide feedback.
  • Safely lift/move program materials and navigate outdoor environments.
  • Respond effectively in medical or behavioral emergencies with First Aid/CPR as needed.
  • Support site operations and duties contributing to program effectiveness.
