Job summary

The Des Moines Public School District is seeking an On-Call Interpreter to provide as-needed oral interpretation between multilingual students, families, and school staff. This role supports two-way communication and ensures confidentiality during conversations and meetings.

Starting immediately, this part-time position reports to the Bilingual Family Liaison Coordinator and requires a high school diploma with interpretation experience. A criminal background check is required.

Qualifications

• Education: High School Diploma.
• Experience providing interpretation, translation, family engagement support, volunteer service, or school/community support is desired.

Responsibilities

• Provide as-needed oral interpretation between multilingual students, families, and school staff during conversations, meetings, events, and other communications.
• Support two-way communication by accurately conveying information, questions, and responses between families and school personnel.
• Use clear, respectful, and culturally responsive communication when interacting with students, families, staff, and community members.
• Refer questions and requests outside the interpreter role to appropriate staff.
• Coordinate with the Bilingual Family Liaison Coordinator and other staff regarding interpreter needs, scheduling, and expectations.
