Job summary

NC State University seeks qualified ASL interpreters for a Temporary Interpreter Pool to be called on as-needed for classes, trainings, and campus events. Interpreters use American Sign Language (ASL), Signed English, Contact sign, Oral Transliteration, and/or Cued Speech to facilitate communication among Deaf, Hard-of-Hearing, Deaf-Blind, and hearing individuals.

Applicants should have an Associate’s degree with Deaf culture knowledge in a post-secondary setting and a provisional license from

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree with demonstrated Deaf culture knowledge in a post-secondary environment.
  • Provisional NCITLB license or pending EIPA to obtain provisional licensure.

Responsibilities

  • Provide sign-language accommodations for all academic and non-academic activities on NC State campus.
  • Prepare for interpreting assignments by learning new terminology and course material as needed.
  • Provide interpreting services for trainings, workshops, community awareness activities, and other community services as required or assigned.
  • Mentor interns from local and regional interpreter training programs.
  • Attend staff meetings and assist in preparing needed reports.
  • Foster and maintain interpreting competence through ongoing development of knowledge and skills.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and stay abreast of evolving language use and trends in the profession of interpreting and the American Deaf community.
  • Facilitate communication between members of the postsecondary community who are Deaf, Hard-of-Hearing, or Deaf-Blind and hearing members.
  • Adhere to the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct (CPC).
  • Assess individual situations to determine linguistic and cultural needs of each student and related language preferences.
