Job summary

As an On-Call Archaeologist for Eocene Environmental Group, you will support a variety of cultural resource projects across the Midwest region, with a strong focus on work within Illinois and Indiana. This position is not tied to a specific location, offering the opportunity to contribute to diverse field and research efforts throughout the broader region.

Candidates should hold a bachelor's degree in archaeology or anthropology and be proficient in documenting archaeological sites and IOs/IFs

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in archaeology, anthropology, or related field.
• Proficient in prehistoric and/or historic archaeology in the Midwest.
• Proficient in documenting archaeological sites and IOs/IFs in the Midwest.
• Strong organizational, motivated, thorough, accurate, and dependable traits.
• Excellent navigational skills (GPS and compass) and ability to navigate and drive 4WD vehicles.
• English reading/writing/speaking sufficient for job duties.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a Crew Member for the project
• Conduct Phase I and Phase II cultural resources surveys
• Document archaeological sites and IOs/IFs
• Conduct probing or shovel testing
• Use hand-held field technology (ArcGIS phone/tablet app with sub-meter GPS)
• Work in moderate weather conditions (temperature fluctuations, rain/snow)
• Walk 4–10 miles per day over rough terrain and lift up to 50 lbs
• Work independently yet collaboratively in a team
• Maintain regular and punctual attendance
• Follow instructions and incorporate feedback
• Support Wright’s and Eocene Environmental Group's safety culture and ownership
• Comply with laws, policies, and procedures
• Position will require outside travel

Compensation

$22 to $30 an hour based on experience

This position is based in the Midwest and offers flexibility to work remotely. Candidates must be located within the Midwest - IL, or IN preferred.

JOB SUMMARY

JOB REQUIREMENTS

• Holds a bachelor's degree in archaeology, anthropology, or related field:

• Proficient in documenting archaeological sites and IOs/IFs in the Mid-west region


• Organized, motivated, thorough, accurate, dependable, and trustworthy


• Excellent navigational skills (GPS and compass) and ability to navigate and drive 4WD vehicles


• Ability to read, write and speak English sufficient to perform job duties and to interact and communicate with employees and vendors

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

• Proficiency using tablets (Apple iPad or Samsung Galaxy) to document cultural resources


• Proficiency with sub-meter GPS receiver


• Proficiency with ArcGIS Field Maps and Survey123 applications (for phone or tablet)


• Previous NHPA, NEPA, FERC, and/or other cultural or environmental trainings


• Strong writing and editing skills


• Ability to evaluate resources for NRHP-eligibility
