Job summary

Peraton is seeking an Ocean Modeling & Data Assimilation Researcher to join the Naval Research Laboratory at Stennis Space Center. The role focuses on improving ocean model capabilities and assimilating high-resolution observational data to support ESPC and global forecasts.

Responsibilities include developing ensemble-based assimilation frameworks, processing remote ocean observations, and validating model enhancements for research and operations.

Qualifications

  • MS in Oceanography, Mathematics, Physics, or related field (PhD preferred).
  • Proficiency in Fortran, Python, and MATLAB.
  • Experience with Linux, shell scripting, VSCode, and HPC.
  • Strong understanding of Numerical Methods, Ocean Modeling, and Data Assimilation.
  • Familiarity with U.S. Navy ocean modeling systems.
  • Must be eligible to obtain a DoD Secret Clearance.
  • Prior experience in a Department of Defense research environment is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Writing and optimizing Fortran code for Navy Data Assimilation systems
  • Developing code for ensemble-based data assimilation frameworks
  • Designing schema for processing remotely sensed ocean observations
  • Creating and testing algorithms for operational and research-grade ocean models
  • Conducting evaluation and validation of model enhancements
  • Publishing research in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at scientific conferences
