Job summary

UC San Diego is seeking a Warehouse & Development Technician to support oceanographic instrument development, fabrication, and deployment. Responsibilities include receiving, organizing, and distributing shipments, as well as assisting with drifter assembly preparation and materials staging.

The role requires basic shop skills, use of hand and power tools, inventory discipline, and the ability to work safely in a collaborative research environment with scientists and engineers.

Qualifications

• Basic computer skills including email and common software.
• Experience using hand tools and basic shop equipment.
• Experience operating handheld power tools in a professional, educational, construction, manufacturing, or workshop environment.
• Knowledge of hardware components (bolts, screws, washers, nuts).
• Ability to organize materials, maintain inventory records, and count accurately.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work with diverse teams.

Responsibilities

• Receive, inspect, and distribute incoming packages and materials.
• Prepare, package, and coordinate outgoing shipments.
• Sort, organize, count, and inventory hardware and fabrication components.
• Assist staff with material preparation for drifter assembly and fabrication.
• Maintain inventory accuracy and organized storage areas.
• Perform general warehouse, workshop, and studio housekeeping duties.
• Use hand and power tools to support fabrication activities.
• Follow safety procedures when operating tools and materials.
• Assist with lifting and transporting equipment as needed.
• Communicate with stakeholders regarding materials, shipments, and inventory.
