Job summary

University of California San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego seeks an Oceanographic Instrumentation Engineer to calibrate, maintain, troubleshoot, and deploy shipboard and shore-based instruments for oceanographic data collection.

You will join a multidisciplinary engineering team, support field expeditions and calibration labs, manage sensor inventories, perform routine maintenance, and contribute to data quality and safety on research vessels.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in electronic or mechanical engineering or equivalent experience.
• Experience at sea on oceanographic research vessels or similar field work.
• Experience with oceanographic instrumentation on research vessels and safety aspects.
• Proficiency with electronic test equipment for maintenance and calibration.
• Knowledge of ocean data collection theories and practices.
• Knowledge of oceanographic sample collection and analysis techniques.
• Ability to maintain detailed records and prepare technical documents.
• Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams on national/international projects.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical support for calibration, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, deployment, and operational support of oceanographic instrumentation.
• Support calibration laboratory operations, inventories, and sensor maintenance.
• Configure, test, pack, ship, and install equipment for research cruises.
• Provide technical support to research vessels in port and at sea, including on expeditions.
