Job summary

UC San Diego is seeking a Development Technician 1 to join the Temporary Employment Services program. The role supports the research, development, production, and deployment of oceanographic instrumentation, focusing on assembly and fabrication of drifters and related equipment.

Responsibilities include receiving, packing, coordinating shipments, organizing inventory, and assisting technical staff with preparation for fabrication.

Qualifications

  • Experience with hand tools and basic shop equipment.
  • Experience operating handheld power tools in an educational, construction, manufacturing, or workshop environment.
  • Knowledge of common hardware components (bolts, screws, washers, nuts, and related materials).
  • Ability to organize materials, maintain inventory records, and perform detailed counting tasks.
  • Valid California Driver's License and ability to maintain an acceptable driving record.
  • Experience working in a warehouse, fabrication shop, manufacturing environment, or research support operation.

DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, the Warehouse & Development Technician supports the research, development, production, and deployment of oceanographic instrumentation. This position provides operational support for the assembly and fabrication of oceanographic drifters and related equipment used in research initiatives.

Primary responsibilities include the following:

  • Receiving, processing, and distributing incoming shipments
  • Preparing and coordinating outgoing shipments
  • Organizing and inventorying components used in equipment fabrication
  • Supporting technical staff with assembly preparation activities.

The incumbent will also assist with maintaining organized warehouse, shop, and studio spaces to ensure safe and efficient operations. This position works closely with scientists, engineers, technicians, vendors, and support staff in a collaborative research environment.

Key Responsibilities:

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Basic computer skills, including experience using email, printers, and common software applications.
  • Experience using hand tools and basic shop equipment.
  • Experience operating handheld power tools in a professional, educational, construction, manufacturing, or workshop environment.
  • Knowledge of common hardware components, including bolts, screws, washers, nuts, and related materials.
  • Ability to organize materials, maintain inventory records, and perform detailed counting tasks.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and professional disciplines.
  • Ability to lift and carry materials weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Valid California Driver's License and ability to maintain an acceptable driving record.
  • Experience working in a warehouse, fabrication shop, manufacturing environment, construction setting, or research support operation.
  • Experience operating carpentry equipment such as table saws and chop saws.
  • Basic carpentry or fabrication experience.
  • Experience receiving, shipping, and inventorying materials and equipment.

This position has been identified as a Mandated Reporter pursuant to the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) and Requires immediate reporting of physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, or neglect of anyone under the age of 18. It is the responsibility of the Mandated Reporter to ensure that they obtain proper training in order to fulfill their reporting responsibilities as Required by the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and University policy, and to complete and submit the Required reports to the UC San Diego Police Department without delay.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $57,629 - $68,883 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $27.60 - $32.99

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
