Job summary

The Hartford is seeking an Underwriting Director for Ocean Cargo to lead a complex portfolio, influence profitability, and guide broker engagement. This senior role requires deep underwriting expertise, strategic leadership, and strong relationship management with brokers, clients, and internal teams.

You will drive portfolio performance, mentor talent, and contribute to broader underwriting strategy while traveling as needed and supporting a hybrid work arrangement.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of Ocean Cargo and/or Ocean Marine underwriting experience.
• Strong leadership and talent development capabilities.
• Proven ability to manage underwriting authority and complex risk selection.

Responsibilities

• Underwrite and manage a complex Ocean Cargo and Marine portfolio for growth, retention, and profitability.
• Develop and maintain relationships with brokers, clients, and distribution partners to drive profitable growth.
• Mentor, coach, and develop underwriting talent and promote a high-performing team.
• Contribute to underwriting strategy, product development, and process improvements across cross-functional teams.
