Job summary

Perpetua Resources Idaho, Inc. is seeking an Occupational Health & Safety Superintendent to lead the site safety strategy at the Stibnite Mine area in Idaho.

This role partners with operations leaders, supervisors, employees, and contractors to drive a culture of safety excellence and regulatory compliance. The candidate will manage risk, incident investigations, health programs, emergency preparedness, and contractor safety across mining activities.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety or related field.
• Professional certifications such as CSP, CRSP, CIH, CMSP, CHST or equivalent preferred.
• Minimum 8+ years of progressive health and safety experience in mining/related industries.

Description

The Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) Superintendent is responsible for leading the site's health and safety strategy, programs, and compliance initiatives to ensure a safe, healthy, and productive work environment. This role partners with operational leaders, supervisors, employees, and contractors to drive a culture of safety excellence, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement across all mining activities.

The OH&S Superintendent serves as a key member of the site leadership team and provides strategic guidance on risk management, incident prevention, occupational health, emergency preparedness, and safety performance

Requirements

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Safety Leadership & Culture

• Champion a proactive safety culture where safety is integrated into all operational decisions.
• Provide leadership, coaching, and mentorship to supervisors and employees on safety expectations and best practices.
• Facilitate behavior-based safety initiatives and workforce engagement programs.
• Lead site-wide safety campaigns, communications, and recognition programs.
• Promote visible felt leadership through regular field presence and interactions with employees.

Regulatory Compliance

• Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state/provincial, and local mining and occupational health and safety regulations.
• Maintain knowledge of regulatory requirements and emerging industry standards.
• Manage inspections, audits, and interactions with regulatory agencies.
• Develop and maintain policies, procedures, and standards aligned with legislative requirements and company expectations.

Risk Management

• Lead hazard identification, risk assessment, and risk mitigation programs.
• Oversee critical risk management processes for mining, mobile equipment, explosives, confined spaces, working at heights, ground control, and other high-risk activities.
• Monitor effectiveness of controls and implement corrective actions where necessary.
• Facilitate risk reviews related to operational changes and new projects.

Incident Management & Investigations

• Lead investigations of incidents, injuries, near misses, property damage, and high-potential events.
• Identify root causes and ensure effective corrective and preventive actions are implemented.
• Analyze safety data and trends to identify improvement opportunities.
• Prepare detailed reports and presentations for site and corporate leadership.

Occupational Health & Industrial Hygiene

• Oversee occupational health programs, including exposure monitoring and health surveillance.
• Manage industrial hygiene initiatives related to dust, noise, vibration, heat stress, chemicals, and other workplace hazards.
• Coordinate wellness and fitness-for-duty programs.
• Ensure employee and contractor health programs align with regulatory requirements and industry best practices.

Training & Competency Development

• Develop and implement comprehensive safety training programs.
• Ensure employees and contractors receive required certifications and competency assessments.
• Support leadership development related to safety management and accountability.
• Track compliance with mandatory training requirements.

Emergency Preparedness & Response

• Lead emergency response planning, training, and drills.
• Coordinate emergency preparedness efforts with internal and external stakeholders.
• Ensure emergency response teams maintain readiness and competency.
• Evaluate and continuously improve emergency management systems.

Contractor Safety Management

• Oversee contractor qualification, onboarding, and performance management processes.
• Ensure contractor activities comply with site safety requirements.
• Monitor contractor safety performance and implement corrective actions as needed.

Performance Management & Reporting

• Establish and track leading and lagging safety indicators.
• Develop safety improvement plans and annual objectives.
• Prepare reports and presentations for site leadership and corporate stakeholders.
• Manage departmental budgets and resources effectively.

Qualifications

Education

• Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Health, Mining Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Risk Management, or related field.
• Professional certifications such as CSP, CRSP, CIH, CMSP, CHST, or equivalent preferred.

Experience

• 8+ years of progressive health and safety experience in mining, heavy industry, construction, or related sectors.
• Minimum 3–5 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
• Experience with surface and/or underground mining operations preferred.
• Demonstrated success implementing safety management systems and driving cultural change.

Certifications

MSHA Training & Certifications (U.S.)

• MSHA Part 46 or Part 48 (surface or underground mining)

Working Conditions

• This position is based on-site at the Stibnite Mine near Yellow Pine, Idaho.
• Frequent work in field, construction, and active mining environments.
• Exposure to varying weather conditions, uneven terrain, loud noise, and heavy equipment.
• Occasional extended or irregular hours during major construction activities, shutdowns, or critical project milestones.
• Mandatory use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to all site safety protocols.
