Eastside Medical Center is seeking a Surgical Technologist to support Labor & Delivery operations in the Obstetrics OR. The role requires scrubbing, sterile technique, and instrument handling during obstetrical procedures under RN supervision.

Responsibilities

• Handle instruments, supplies and equipment during obstetrical operations in the Labor and Delivery OR.
• Act as scrub person and maintain sterile field.
• Assist with room setup and draping, instrument passing.
• Maintain highest standard of sterile technique.
• Perform patient care duties under the direction of a registered nurse.
• Prepare case carts and order supplies.
• Support licensed staff by performing delegated treatments.

Overview

We are a 13-bed unit with 4 overflow antepartum rooms, 2 OR suites and a new 4 bed OB-ED. We have 24/7 coverage by a Hospitalist, along with a great group of physicians. Any laboring mom or preterm mom greater than 20 weeks may be seen on this unit; along with postpartum moms needing to be readmitted. Our goal is to adhere to the AWHONN standards. We closely monitor staffing to patient census which means1:2 laboring patients, 1:1 active labor or C-section, 1:3 antepartum patients and 1:4 triage/OB-ED. We provide patient centered care as the entire health care team work together to care for mother and baby.

Responsibilities

Responsible for handling the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the obstetrical operations performed in the Operating Room located in the Labor and Delivery unit. He/she has an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. He/she has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and is constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field. Performs patient care duties under the direction of a registered nurse.

Functions as a member of the surgical team in the role of scrub person.

• * Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure which includes review and utilization of appropriate preference card.
• * Assists with room set-up to include opening of sterile supplies.
• * Sets up sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment and medication/solutions needed for procedure.
• * Performs appropriate surgical counts with circulator.
• * Actively participates in the procedure pause/time-out.
• * Gowns and gloves surgeon and assistants.
• * Assists in draping sterile field.
• * Passes instruments to surgeon during the procedure.
• * Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during procedure.
• * Prepares sterile dressings.
• * Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilizationPerforms patient care duties in Labor and Delivery under the direction of a registered nurse.
• * Supports licensed staff by performing treatments or procedures as delegated and only those which he/she is competent and in a safe, accurate and timely manner; this includes clipping, prepping surgical site, and positioning of patient.
• * Appropriately modifies the approach to patients when performing specific procedures/tasks.
• * Use appropriate equipment and resources when performing procedures and providing information.
• * Provides comfort and safety measures for the patient.

Performs other essential duties.

• * Prepares case carts according to procedure and preference cards.
• * Orders supplies and linen for Labor & Delivery.
• * Serves as willing, cooperative, informative, supportive guide for new employees
• * Remain competent knowledge in area(s) of surgical aseptic technique, perioperative procedures in Labor & Delivery, surgical scrub for C-sections, D&Cs, and vaginal deliveries.

Qualifications

Education

• H.S. Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) Required

Work Experience

• Graduate from a Surgical Technologist training program Required or
• 1 year previous operating room experience as a Surgical/Delivery Room Technologist Required or
• 3 years of experience providing direct patient care in a clinical setting Required

Licenses and Certifications

• BCLS - Basic Life Support Upon Hire Required
• NRP - Neonatal Resuscitation Preferred
