Job description

OB/GYN Hospitalist – Academic Position

Overview

The Department of OB/GYN at Denver Health Medical Center (DHMC) is recruiting a skilled OB/GYN Hospitalist physician interested in resident and fellow education to join our team. We seek candidates whose clinical experience, dedication to teaching, interest in research, or community service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to excellence. The position offers full-scope practice in a multidisciplinary inclusive collaborative team with opportunities for leadership roles and professional development. Clinical responsibilities include acting as the attending physician and/or as an independent provider covering Labor and Delivery, Postpartum, Obstetric Emergency Department, gynecology consults, and urgent/emergent gynecology procedures. Clinical schedules can be as flexible or as set as desired with emphasis on night coverage.

About the OB/GYN department

DHMC is a teaching hospital located in the heart of Denver. It is a 525‑bed hospital with Trauma 1 level designation and level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The department of OB/GYN provides full scope obstetric and gynecologic care through a collaborative integrated service model working with OB/GYN physicians, subspecialists, Certified Nurse Midwives (CNM), and Family Medicine physicians. We deliver over 4,000 patients per year, which is nearly a third of all births in the city of Denver. The GYN service provides comprehensive care performing over 1,300 inpatient and outpatient surgical procedures per year. We serve a diverse patient population where most of our patients identify as Hispanic/Latina, and our patients speak over 23 different languages.

Schedule and clinical responsibilities

A full‑time physician will have a monthly schedule of 12-14 clinical shifts where a shift lasts 10 hours (7 am‑5 pm) or 14 hours (5 pm‑7 am). The shifts are a mix of day and night shifts with emphasis on night shift coverage. Scheduling can be as flexible or set, other factors permitting, as desired. For example, shift scheduling can include 24‑hour shifts and flexible scheduling such as 3 inpatient night shifts per week, or 2 inpatient night shifts and 1 daytime weekend shift.

This physician will share responsibility with the on‑call OB/GYN attending in assisting with concurrent deliveries, obstetrical emergencies, and patient care. Clinical responsibilities include labor and delivery management, supervision of resident physicians, CNMs, FM providers, medical students, and other learners, and hands‑on clinical care in Labor and Delivery, Postpartum, Gynecology, and Obstetrical ED. This physician will be working in a busy, acute care environment where they are a member of a multidisciplinary collaborative team with the support of another OB/GYN attending physician. This physician should enjoy working directly with patients, resident physicians, and other learners. This physician should be in support of the hospital and department’s mission to provide high quality evidence‑based patient care.

Academic affiliation and medical education

DHMC serves as one of the three clinical sites for the highly competitive University of Colorado OB/GYN residency program which trains 9 residents per year. In addition, DHMC is the clinical site for many medical programs including the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, emergency medical services, and others. DHMC is formally affiliated with the University of Colorado School of Medicine where all faculty have full‑time academic appointments. In addition to resident and medical student training, our department has just started a new OB/GYN hospitalist fellowship with our first fellow starting in the summer of 2025.

Leadership opportunities and professional growth

The position offers faculty appointment through the University of Colorado School of Medicine. With the newly started hospitalist fellowship, there is a significant leadership opportunity if desired. The Residency Program provides additional prospects for involvement in resident medical education. Lastly, there are numerous opportunities for involvement in departmental and hospital level initiatives involving patient safety and quality improvement, policies and procedures, medical staff initiatives, and others.
