This position will support facilities projects and engineering team in either the plant engineering, project engineering, or crane engineering team. Candidate shall demonstrate solid knowledge of applicable regulations, codes and standards for this position. Candidates shall analyze, research and develop structural engineering specifications for product designs. Applications shall include buildings, foundations, and equipment considering multiple materials and construction techniques. Task shall include analyses of damage, durability, design allowables and structural modeling. Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue and thermal analysis. Tools utilized may include CATIA, IDEAS, ProEngineer and a variety of software applications. Works under only general direction. Independently determines and develops approach to solutions. The candidate shall be capable of solving problems in an organized manner. Basic MS Office suit and AutoCAD skills are needed (Word and Excel) as well as the ability to communicate clearly with supervisors, peers and customers. Additional skills needed are the ability to work in AutoCAD, understanding of simple electrical and mechanical drawings, use project scheduling tools, understanding of the various types of submittals associated with a project, an understanding of legal and sourcing requirements.

Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating, equipment and maintenance designs. Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling. Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue and thermal analysis. Tools utilized may include CATIA, IDEAS, ProEngineer and a variety of software applications.

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience;
Master’s Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience;
Ph.D. and 0 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the mechanical or structural disciplines
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to build strong working relationships and rapport with NNS production, engineering, safety, maintenance, and contractor personnel
Proficient in pertinent structural/building codes and design standards
PMP Certification, PMI
