Job summary

The New York City Department of Buildings seeks an Inspector (Plumbing) to enforce the NYC Construction Code across the city. You will inspect plumbing, gas, and fire suppression systems, witness tests, and issue violations according to approved plans.

Job requires knowledge of codes, ability to review drawings and licenses, and readiness to testify in hearings. Shifts may include nights or weekends; a NY driver license is required.

Qualifications

  • Two years of full-time satisfactory experience performing one or a combination of the following: plumber, inspector, or superintendent of plumbers.
  • One year of full-time experience and one year of formal training in plumbing or related field.
  • Sixty credits towards a related degree in engineering or similar field.
  • Completion of an apprentice program in plumbing or plumbing inspection (min 2 years).
  • License as a professional engineer or registered architect in NYS.
  • Equivalent education/experience to the above.
  • After meeting minimum requirements, three additional years for Assignment Level II, and one more year for Level III; supervisory experience for Level IV.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect plumbing, gas, and fire suppression systems for code compliance.
  • Respond to accidents and complaints; enforce rules and plans.
  • Witness tests for code violations.
  • Review drawings and obtain inspection details.
  • Issue violations, summonses, and stop-work orders.
  • Verify licenses of onsite workers.
  • Testify as needed at ECB, depositions, and court.
  • Maintain records and generate reports.
  • Explain and enforce relevant laws and rules.
  • May supervise subordinates and review applications.
