Job summary

State of West Virginia is seeking a Nutritionist to promote and present public health nutrition programs, primarily within WIC clinics, and to serve as a resource for healthcare providers across nine Mid-Ohio Valley counties.

You will assess nutritional status, educate participants, certify WIC eligibility, and tailor food packages while delivering classes and referrals to needed services.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in nutrition and foods, dietetics, or public health nutrition, or a related field with 12 semester hours of nutrition coursework.
• Eligible to drive a vehicle; a valid driver's license may be required.

Responsibilities

• Promote and present public health nutrition programs.
• Provide nutritional assessment, education and counseling to individuals and groups (prenatal and pediatric, especially WIC).
• Serve as a nutrition resource to nurses, health educators and other providers.
• Evaluate and certify WIC eligibility.
• Assess nutritional risk status and counsel on diet and food selections.
• Recommend WIC food packages and prepare nutrition classes for participants.
• Refer participants to appropriate health and social services.
• Distribute nutrition materials and attend trainings and workshops.
• Travel to all nine Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department counties.

Job description

Under general supervision, performs professional work by promoting and presenting public health nutrition programs.

• Provide nutritional assessment, education and counseling to individuals and groups, primarily prenatal and pediatric clinics, with emphasis on participants in the Special Supplemental Food Program for WIC
• Serve as a resource on nutrition and dietetics to nurses, health educators and other health care providers in local health departments, local public and private health care facilities and the community. Work is governed by Federal regulations and State policies and procedures.
• Evaluate and certify the eligibility of applicants for participation in the WIC program.
• Assess and document nutritional risk status of participants.
• Counsel participants concerning diet and food selections.
• Recommend a WIC food package tailored to the participant’s needs.
• Prepare and present nutrition classes to WIC participants as well as other interested groups.
• Refer WIC participants to appropriate health and social agencies for additional assistance.
• Distribute current nutrition promotional/educational materials.
• Attend in-service training, meetings, seminars and workshops pertaining to current practices in the field of nutrition.
• Public contact and travel to all nine Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department counties are required.
• Other related duties as needed.

Training

Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university in nutrition and foods, dietetics, or public health nutrition; or a Bachelor's degree in a related field with 12 semester hours of coursework in nutrition.

Special Requirement

A valid driver's license may be required.
