Job description

Nutrition Education Coordinator, Bureau of Chronic Disease Prevention

The Center for Health Equity and Community Wellness (CHECW) aims to eliminate racial and other inequities that lead to premature mortality. CHECW works to increase visibility of the harm caused by racist and socially unjust policies, advocating for redress in NYC communities. The division partners with community, faith-based, and healthcare organizations to address social determinants of health, including environmental and commercial factors, and tackles upstream and downstream health issues.

The Bureau of Chronic Disease Prevention (BCDP) within CHECW focuses on reducing chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer among New Yorkers. BCDP employs evidence-based policies, programs, and research to promote health equity, working on issues like nutrition, tobacco use, the built environment, and commercial determinants of health. The bureau also collaborates with community organizations, especially in neighborhoods disproportionately affected by chronic diseases, through programs like Stellar Farmers Markets (SFM), funded in part by SNAP-Ed, offering bilingual nutrition workshops and cooking demonstrations.

The position of Nutrition Education Coordinator involves supporting the implementation of the SFM program, coordinating logistics at community sites, engaging with partners, developing educational materials, and supervising staff.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Coordinating SFM logistics, outreach, and community engagement.
  • Building and maintaining partnerships with community organizations.
  • Developing and updating educational and promotional materials.
  • Hiring, training, and supervising temporary staff, monitoring program implementation, and conducting staff meetings.
  • Managing equipment, supplies, inventory, and petty cash for workshops.
  • Preparing reports on program impacts and community partnerships.
Preferred skills:
  • At least 2 years of experience in nutrition or culinary education in low-income communities.
  • At least 1 year of supervisory experience.
  • Experience working with community partners and on food security issues.
  • Professional culinary experience, ServSafe certification, and ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Experience with SNAP-Ed grants or similar programs; proficiency in Microsoft Office.
Minimum qualifications:
  • Baccalaureate degree and two years of community work experience related to the duties, or
  • High school diploma and six years of relevant experience, or
  • Equivalent education/experience with at least one year of relevant experience.
Additional information:

NYC residency required within 90 days, with some exceptions. The department is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity and inclusion. For accommodations, contact Sye-Eun Ahn at sahn1@health.nyc.gov or 347-396-6549.
