Job description

Nutrition Education Coordinator, Bureau of Chronic Disease Prevention

The Center for Health Equity and Community Wellness (CHECW) aims to eliminate racial and other inequities that lead to premature mortality. CHECW works to increase visibility of harm caused by racist and unjust policies, advocating for redress in NYC communities. The division partners with community, faith-based, and healthcare organizations to address social determinants of health, including environmental and commercial factors, focusing on upstream and downstream health improvements.

The Bureau of Chronic Disease Prevention (BCDP) within CHECW focuses on reducing chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer among New Yorkers. It emphasizes nutrition, tobacco use, the built environment, and the impact of commercial determinants like Big Tobacco, Big Salt, and Big Sugar. BCDP collaborates with government, healthcare, and community entities to implement evidence-based policies and programs promoting health equity, especially in neighborhoods disproportionately affected by chronic diseases.

The role involves coordinating the Stellar Farmers Markets (SFM) program, funded partly by SNAP-Ed, providing bilingual nutrition workshops and cooking demonstrations to promote healthy eating and increase fruit and vegetable consumption.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate logistics for SFM at community sites in underserved NYC neighborhoods, including outreach and partnership development.
  • Support community partners through technical assistance and relationship building.
  • Develop and update educational materials, including promotional slides, handouts, recipes, and lesson plans.
  • Hire, train, and supervise temporary staff, monitor program implementation, and conduct staff check-ins.
  • Approve timesheets, monitor staff efforts, and support culinary education initiatives.
  • Manage equipment, supplies, and inventory for workshops, including distribution and tracking of expenses.
  • Prepare quarterly impact reports for funders, highlighting program reach and community partnerships.
Preferred Skills
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in nutrition or culinary education in low-income communities.
  • At least 1 year of supervisory experience.
  • Experience building community partnerships and working on food systems and health equity issues.
  • Proficiency in culinary training and food safety certification (e.g., Serv Safe).
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and coordinate SNAP-Ed funded projects.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Baccalaureate degree with two years of relevant community work, or
  • High school diploma with six years of relevant experience, or
  • Equivalent education/experience with at least one year of relevant experience.

Residency in NYC or nearby counties may be required within 90 days of appointment. The NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity and inclusion. Reasonable accommodations are available upon request.
