Job summary

Southern Ohio Medical Center is seeking a Nursing Intern to work under the supervision of the Nurse Manager and nursing staff. The role involves performing basic patient care, documenting in the EMR, and rotating through departments as needed.

Ideal candidates are enrolled in an approved nursing program, possess a high school diploma, and can complete a basic patient care course. BLS within 90 days is required; no prior experience is necessary.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or successful completion of an equivalent High School Exam required.
• Ability to read, write, and speak English required.
• Completion of course in basic patient care required.
• Enrolled in an approved school of nursing required.

Responsibilities

• Participates in learning opportunities by working with an RN.
• Performs basic patient care activities and documents in nursing notes as necessary in EMR.
• Observes patients and reports unusual conditions and/or reactions to Registered Nurse.
• Assists with admissions, discharge, and transfer of patients.
• Answers call lights and responds to patient needs.
• Maintains patient environment and performs routine cleaning tasks in nursing unit/patient rooms.
• Obtains patient data, including vital signs, I&O's, and pulse oximetry and will document in EMR.
• Performs clean non-sterile dressing changes under the supervision of a nurse and documents in the nurse's notes.
• Removes urinary catheters.
• Performs Point of Care testing.
• Performs bladder scans.
• Maintains bed exit alarms and posey sitters and responds immediately to all alarms.
• Assists with heating/cooling blankets.
• Collects clean catch urine, urine cultures and sensitivity, 24-hour urines, and stool specimens.
• Measures and empties suction canisters and drainage bags.
• Sets up wall suctions.
• Performs the role of patient "sitter" as assigned.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

GENERAL SUMMARY

Works under the supervision of the Nurse Manager of Shift Mgrs and Nursing Interns. The Nursing Intern's primary job function isto perform a variety of basic patient care activities in caring for the personal needs and comfort of patients. Performs other dutiesas assigned. Supports each strategic value by providing excellent care to those we serve. Will be required to attend required classes.Will rotate to different departments throughout the hospital.
