This range is provided by U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Your actual pay will be based on your skills and experience — talk with your recruiter to learn more.

Base pay range: $37,096.00/yr - $60,560.00/yr

Summary

Nursing Assistants at this grade level function as a member of the nursing care team, assisting licensed nursing staff in caring for patients receiving preventative, acute, subacute, chronic, maintenance, and hospice care. Patient assignments typically involve more complex nursing needs, which can vary within a range of predictable to unpredictable requirements. NAs at this level also take on peer education and mentorship roles.

Duties

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Utilizes glucose monitoring machines to receive glucose readings for veterans.
  • Provides direct care for complex veterans.
  • Makes observations of subtle changes in residents' conditions, such as behavior shifts, mood, skin coloring, appetite, etc.
  • Documents care, observations, and responses on appropriate tools or forms.
  • Performs oral and nasopharyngeal suctioning.
  • Performs complete tracheostomy care, including suctioning.
  • Monitors and documents patient intake and output.
  • Performs nursing procedures within scope of practice, such as enemas, catheterization, colostomy care, skin care, simple dressings, and application of braces and prosthetic devices.
  • Works on small group activities with veterans/residents according to treatment plans.
  • Recognizes resident autonomy and promotes independence through respect, setting limits, and individualized treatment.
  • Participates actively in treatment planning meetings.
  • Utilizes equipment to promote self-care, such as lift equipment, hydro sound tubs, and wandering systems.
  • Provides patient information to the treatment team for care planning.
  • Enters information about residents' conditions in charts using appropriate formats.
  • Maintains a clean, safe environment for patients/residents.
Work Schedule

Full-Time 8/12 Hour Shifts, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays. Flexibility to work other shifts, be on call, and support other units as needed.

Qualifications

Basic requirements include U.S. citizenship, six months of general experience or related education/training, and proficiency in English. Additional qualifications vary by grade (GS-3 to GS-5), with specific experience and education requirements outlined.
