Job summary

Mercy San Juan Medical Center is seeking a full-time Operating Room Registered Nurse (RN) to support a busy surgical services department. The role focuses on perioperative assessment, coordination with surgeons and anesthesiologists, and skilled assistance with cardiac and general surgeries.

Ideal candidates hold a California RN license and BLS certification, with at least one year in an OR or cardiac setting.

Qualifications

• One year of RN experience in an operating room or cardiac surgery setting.
• Active RN license in California.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from American Heart Association.
• Weekday, Weekend and Holiday rotations.
• Call required on nights & weekends with maximum thirty (30) minute response time.

Responsibilities

• Perform patient assessment based on diagnosis and perioperative status before entering the OR.
• Plan and implement perioperative care coordinating with the surgeon and anesthesiologist.
• Assist surgeons with procedures and manage OR equipment and safety protocols.
• Document care legibly and accurately in the EMR and time/charge systems.
• Demonstrate leadership when taking charge in absence of management and promote teamwork.
• Communicate effectively with the care team to support safe patient outcomes.

Job Summary and Responsibilities

As our full time day Operating Room Registered Nurse (RN), you will help individuals and families receive safe and holistic care so they can achieve optimal health outcomes in a supportive environment at Mercy San Juan Medical Center. This 370-bed Level 2 trauma facility boasts 10 main operating rooms and 1 dedicated cardiac operating room.

Every day you will deliver competent care and evaluate patient responses within our comprehensive Surgical Services. Our department handles approximately 650 surgical cases monthly, including about 16 cardiac procedures and a consistently increasing volume of spinal procedures. You will be contributing to a broad spectrum of surgical specialties, including: Cardiac, Orthopedics, Robotics (General, Gynecology, Urology, Thoracic), General Surgery, Gynecology, Gyn-Oncology, Plastics, Thoracics, Spine, Neuro, Vascular, Bariatrics, ENT, and Urology. You will be expected to effectively communicate with all members of the healthcare team, document care accurately, and participate in improving organizational performance.

To be successful in this role, you will understand Perianesthesia nursing and demonstrate excellent communication and teamwork abilities.

• Assessment: Performs patient assessment based on diagnosis, cultural and spiritual beliefs, age functional status, psychosocial needs, and/or developmental stage prior to entering the operating room. Verifies all components of Universal Protocol with patient/caregiver and medical record, to include appropriate marking of site/side by surgeon.
• Care of patient: Plans and implements care based on perioperative assessment, integrating the surgeon and anesthesiologist plans of care prior to transporting the patient to the operating room. Using critical thinking skills, prioritizes and organizes care within allotted timeframes and evaluates nursing care and provides patient/caregiver with education.
• Clinical/Technical Skills: Utilizes technology, procedures, standards and interventions specific to the operating room, i.e. all safety issues(policy procedures regarding positioning, prepping, counts and sponge accountability, ESU, and specimen handling etc). Demonstrates ability to assist surgeons with procedures and equipment.
• Documentation: Performs legible, timely, concise and accurate documentation according to policies and procedures. Proficient and competent with the computerized documentation systems (HSM and Cerner). Accurate completion of timecard exception logs, call back slips and missed lunch/break log according to policy. Verifies all required elements of chart and electronic medical record are present prior to taking patient to the OR i.e. H&P, consents, etc.
• Leadership: Accepts responsibility and accountability for own decisions and behaviors. Recognizes, accepts and cooperates with direction from facility leadership. Takes charge as assigned in absence of Manager/Clinical Coordinator.
• Collaborates with care team members to identify approaches for problem solving. Supports and role models teamwork to promote positive relationships/working environment.

Job Requirements

Required

• One (1) year experience as a Registered Nurse in an operating room or cardiac surgery in an acute care setting.
