The Nurse Resident performs basic patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, including tasks involving physical, psychosocial, safety, and security needs of patients. This position requires population-specific competencies. Nurse Residents may not administer medications, intravenous therapy, or perform independent nursing assessments. May be required to float to other units and participate in on-call status.

Responsibilities
  1. Provide personal patient care tasks such as mouth care, making beds, giving baths, and assisting with hygiene and comfort.
  2. Assist with patient safety, including identification protocols, fall prevention, and reporting incidents.
  3. Perform treatments like urinary catheter care, enemas, sitz baths, and assist with ambulation.
  4. Assist with patient admission and discharge procedures.
  5. Conduct basic diagnostic tests, including vital signs, blood glucose monitoring, EKG, telemetry, and pulse oximetry.
  6. Perform selected sterile procedures such as wound care, specimen collection, and urinary catheterization.
  7. May retrieve and transport medications.
  8. Note: Nurse Residents do not administer medications or perform independent assessments. Refer to Oklahoma Board of Nursing guidelines.
  9. Follow standard precautions to minimize exposure to infections and hazards.
Qualifications
  • Must be a new graduate or eligible to graduate from an accredited Nursing Program with NCLEX eligibility.
  • Maximum role duration is 6 months or until passing NCLEX, with the first attempt within 90 days of graduation. Failure to pass within these limits may result in demotion.
