Job summary

Medical City Dallas, part of HCA Healthcare, is seeking a Nurse Extern PRN in Oncology ICU. You will gain hands-on nursing experience while supporting the RN team in delivering safe, compassionate care.

Enrolled in an ADN or BSN program, you will complete required certifications and participate in ongoing learning with supervision. Responsibilities include patient care, documentation, family guidance, and maintaining infection control.

Qualifications

• CPR/BLS is required within 30 days of start date.
• Enrollment in an accredited ADN or BSN program, in good standing.
• Completion of Foundations, Fundamentals, or Med Surg I coursework.
• Strong professional communication skills to interact with patients and families.
• Flexible scheduling with one 12-hour shift weekly or four 12-hour shifts monthly.

Responsibilities

• Provide essential patient care including ADLs, vital signs, mobility support and comfort.
• Perform basic nursing tasks such as wound care, catheter care, specimen collection and related procedures.
• Document care accurately and communicate timely updates to the nursing team.
• Explain care plans to patients and families and offer health guidance.
• Maintain clean, safe patient areas following infection prevention practices.
• Engage in learning opportunities and collaborate with supervisor to plan career development.

Job Summary and Qualifications

As a Nurse Extern, you’ll be a valued part of the nursing team, gaining hands‑on experience as you explore the full scope of the Registered Nurse role. You’ll help deliver safe, compassionate care that improves patients’ lives while building the skills and confidence to take on more advanced responsibilities as you progress through your nursing program.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Providing essential care for patients by helping with ADLs (Activities of Daily Living), checking vital signs, supporting mobility, and ensuring comfort and hygiene
• Performing nursing tasks like wound care, catheter care, collecting specimens, and other basic procedures as you gain experience and grow in your competency
• Documenting care accurately and communicating timely updates with the nursing team to keep patient care seamless and coordinated
• Helping patients and families understand their care plans and offering guidance for their health and recovery
• Keeping patient areas clean and safe by following infection prevention practices, managing equipment, and maintaining an organized environment
• Championing your growth and enhancing patient care by engaging in learning opportunities, sharing ideas to improve care, and partnering with your supervisor or preceptor to build your personal career development plan

What qualifications you will need:

• Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
• Must be enrolled in an accredited ADN or BSN program
• Completed Foundations, Fundamentals, or Med Surg I

• Meet scheduling requirements – one 12 hour shift per week or 4 - 12 hour shifts per month
