Job summary

Appalachian Regional Healthcare, Inc. seeks a Nurse Extern Tier II to provide nursing assistance under supervision. The role includes performing basic nursing procedures, assisting in care planning, taking vital signs, and supporting patient comfort and safety across units.

The extern will gain clinical experience while working under RN direction, with opportunities to learn through hands-on tasks and across departments. Strong communication and discretion are essential for success.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Enrollment in Board of Nursing approved School of Nursing RN Program.
• Completion of basic Nursing Fundamentals and/or CNA Course.
• Current transcripts and skills evaluation.
• Two instructor recommendation letters.

Responsibilities

• Under direct on-site supervision, interpret plan of care and assist in nursing care planning.
• Complete nursing assessments with RN oversight.
• Provide personal care (baths, grooming, feeding, hydration).
• Answer call lights promptly and meet patient needs.
• Collect specimens and input/output, record vital signs.
• Assist with feeding incl. enteral feeds and hydration.
• Assist in ambulation and repositioning of patients.
• Administer enemas, douches, rectal tubes, and document appropriately.
• Apply compression devices, restraints as needed, and ensure patient safety.
• Observe isolation procedures and provide care to isolated patients.
• Assist in ostomy care and education, set up orthopedic appliances.
• Maintain patient care records and prepare patients for procedures.
• Maintain a safe environment for patient care.
