Job summary

North Central Baptist Hospitals is seeking a nurse extern to support basic and intermediate nursing care across assigned units. You will work under supervision to assess patients, participate in care planning, and document care while adhering to established policies.

Must be enrolled in an accredited RN program and in final clinical practicum, with BLS due within 60 days. Shifts may include 4–12 hour blocks. Eligible for comprehensive Baptist Health System benefits.

Qualifications

• Must be currently enrolled in an accredited school of nursing and entering final clinical practicum.
• Must have completed a basic clinical skills lab.
• Active BLS within 60 days of hire and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention within 60 days if applicable.

Responsibilities

Job Summary

Assists in providing basic and intermediate nursing care to assigned group of patients.

General Nursing Units care for patients from age 15 years to maturity by clinically competent nursing staff.

Special Care Areas care for patients age 15 years through adult with high risk conditions by clinical competent nursing staff.

Maternal Child Units: Labor and Delivery care includes patients who have a pregnancy related condition by staff who are clinically competent in maternity care. Nursery care includes care for newborn until discharge status by clinically competent staff. Pediatric clinically competent staff provides care to patients neonate through age of fourteen.

GI Lab Unit cares for toddlers, beginning age 24 months, through adult by clinically competent staff.

Behavioral Health and Geropsychiatric Unit cares for adult patients and family with holistic approach to emotional problems by clinically competent nursing staff.

Emergency Unit provides care to presenting patients of all ages by clinically competent staff in pediatric and high risk adult care.

Acute Rehab Unit provides care to presenting patients of all ages by clinically competent staff.

Able to work at least eight hours per pay-period. May work shift in increments of 4, 8, 10 and 12 hours as assigned. Completes established competencies for the position within designated introductory period. Other related duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

• Assists in providing nursing care to patients under general supervision.
• Assists in assessment of physical, psychological and social dimensions of patients.
• Assists in planning and implementing a formal plan of patient care.
• Assists in evaluating nursing care provided.
• Implements/documents clinical and technical aspects of care assignment in accordance with established policies and procedures and validated skills performance standard.
• Intervenes with proper technique, procedure and safety precautions to meet patients' needs.
• Signs documentation that reflects role of nurse extern.
• Reinforces patient/family instruction as identified in care plan.
• Assists/performs non-invasive and non-sterile treatments and procedures with attention to accuracy as delineated in nurse extern skills list.
• Informs RN preceptor/designee team leader of patient changing conditions and other pertinent observations.

Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION: Must be currently enrolled in an accredited school of nursing, professional nursing (RN) program. Must be entering their final clinical practicum rotation in nursing school.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: Successfully completed a basic clinical skills lab. Skills checklist may be used to validate experience.

REQUIRED COURSES/COMPLETIONS (e.g., CPR)

• Must have active healthcare provider Basic Life Support on hire (ARC or AHA); however, must have AHA Healthcare Provider BLS within 60 days of hire.
• Non-Violent Crisis Intervention obtained within 60 days of hire or transfer to position if working in the ED or Behavioral Health Area.
