Job summary

St. Mary Medical Center is seeking a Nurse Assistant for the MS1D Med/Surg Oncology unit. This full-time day shift role involves supporting direct patient care under RN supervision, stocking supplies, and ensuring patient readiness for admission and discharge.

Responsibilities include feeding patients, documenting intake/output, collecting specimens, applying basic care devices, and participating in hourly rounding to promote safety. BLS and CNA or clinical rotation experience are required.

Qualifications

• High School Graduate/Equivalent is required
• CNA Registration or completion of a nursing program clinical rotation is required
• 1 year of relevant experience and/or EMT certification can substitute for required certification/rotation
• BLS Certification Required

Responsibilities

• Performs direct and indirect patient care activities following RN instructions, physician orders, policies, procedures and regulations
• Obtain supplies from designated supply rooms to assure patient rooms are ready for patient admission and cleared when patient discharged/transferred
• Demonstrates ability to feed patients, understands dysphasia precautions and tracks intake and output
• Collects specimens (urine, clean catch, foley, stool for c-diff, etc.)
• Applies heat/cold packs, ace wraps, slings, binders and orthopedic devices as directed
• Participates in hourly rounding to support patient safety and comfort, communicates safety precautions to patient and family
• Seeks assistance from Nurse Manager for conflict resolution

Position Purpose

The primary objective of this position is to improve quality. To provide direct, basic patient care activities under the guidance and direction of a Registered Nurse. To provide care and cleaning of specific equipment, stocking of supplies and equipment and the transportation of patients, supplies and equipment.

Unit Overview

Unit cares for oncology/chemo patients. MS1D holds 16 beds in private rooms.

As a Nurse Assistant, you will

• Performs direct and indirect patient care activities following RN instructions, physician orders, policies, procedures and regulations
• Obtain supplies from designated supply rooms to assure patient rooms are ready for patient admission and cleared when patient discharged/transferred.
• Demonstrates ability to feed patients, knowledge of dysphasia precautions and calculating and recording intake and output.
• Demonstrates competence while collecting specimens-urine routine, clean catch, foley, stools for c-diff, etc.
• Demonstrates competence with the application of heat and cold packs, ace wraps, slings, binders, protective devices and orthopedic devices.
• Participates in hourly rounding programs and schedules to ensure patient safety and reduce patient harm; observes for environment safety, informs patient and family on safety precautions, turns and repositions patients, preemptively assists with toileting activities, and addresses personal needs.
• Appropriately seeks assistance of the Nurse Manager of designee for conflict resolution.

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Graduate/Equivalent required.
• PA Nurse Aide Registry (CNA) OR completed a minimum of one semester of clinical rotations in an accredited nursing program required.
• 1 year of relevant experience and/or relevant certification (EMT) is considered in lieu of required certification/clinical rotation.
• BLS Required
