Job summary

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory seeks a dynamic scientific leader to become the Director of the Nuclear Science Division. This role oversees a $50 million portfolio, 100+ staff, and 200 affiliates, with responsibilities spanning research, operations, finance, HR, and safety.

The Director will set a vision aligned with a long-term strategic plan, foster collaboration with UC Berkeley, and represent the Lab to funding agencies and the broader research community.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. or equivalent education/experience in nuclear physics or a related field, with at least 10 years post-doctoral experience.
• Internationally recognized scientific leader with a distinguished record of research accomplishments.
• Experience managing large, multi-program research portfolios including safety, financial stewardship, and workforce planning.

Responsibilities

• Provide scientific and operational leadership for the Nuclear Science Division’s research programs and portfolio.
• Partner with operations staff to ensure operational efficiencies across budgets, HR, safety, and facilities.
• Collaborate with Berkeley Lab and UC Berkeley colleagues to advance initiatives and programs.
• Act as a liaison to DOE and other funding agencies and represent the Laboratory in external engagements.
