Job summary

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is seeking a dynamic scientific leader to serve as the Director of the Nuclear Science Division, reporting to the Associate Laboratory Director for Physical Sciences. The Director will provide vision for research and operations, overseeing a $50 million portfolio and a staff of 100+ employees and 200 affiliates.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. or equivalent education/experience in nuclear physics or a related field.
• Internationally recognized leader with a distinguished record of research accomplishments.
• Experience managing a multi-program research portfolio, including safety, financial stewardship, and long-term sustainability.
• Ability to interact effectively with funding agencies, including the DOE.
• Demonstrated scientific and strategic leadership ability for running a large, multidisciplinary organization.
• Experience in human resource management and career development.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills at the highest management levels.
• Commitment to upholding the Laboratory’s stewardship principles for research, people, and resources.

Responsibilities

• Provide scientific and operational leadership for the Nuclear Science Division’s research programs and portfolio of about $50M and 300+ employees and affiliates.
• Develop long-term research vision and initiatives aligned with the Area’s 2025 Strategic Plan and national goals.
• Partner with operations to ensure efficiencies across budgets, workforce planning, HR, EHS, and facilities management.
• Collaborate with UC Berkeley and other institutions to develop cooperative programs for mutual benefit.
• Champion and communicate the Division’s mission, goals, and achievements to stakeholders and the broader research community.
• Contribute to formulation and direction of Laboratory programs to advance Berkeley Lab’s leadership.
• Provide leadership for talent management, recruitment, mentoring, performance management, retention, and succession planning.
