Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, CA invites applications for the Darleane C. Hoffman Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellowship, a two-year program for early-career scientists pursuing long-term careers in nuclear nonproliferation within the DOE national laboratory system.

Fellows will define independent projects, manage budgets and milestones, and perform experimental, field-based, or computational work while building networks across the DOE complex and pursuing potential staff

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in a technical field (chemistry, physics, materials science, engineering, etc.)
• Proven ability to conduct independent research with strong scientific judgment
• Strong track record of publications and presentations
• Demonstrated collaboration and effective communication within multidisciplinary teams

Responsibilities

• Define project scope, objectives, and research strategies for an independent research project advancing nuclear nonproliferation.
• Manage the project's budget, schedule, and milestones, and adapt plans as results emerge.
• Execute technical work, whether experimental, field-based, or computational, and collaborate across disciplines.
• Ensure high-quality data through sound practices in instrumentation, field measurement, modeling, or analysis.
• Communicate results through peer-reviewed publications, technical reports, conference presentations, and sponsor engagement.
• Build collaborative networks across Berkeley Lab and the DOE national laboratory complex.
• Promote a safe, inclusive, high-performing research environment.
• Participate in NextGen programming including scientific leadership, project management, nuclear nonproliferation, and career development.
• Engage in seminars, workshops, and group meetings to foster interdisciplinary exchange and support growth.
• Explore broader DOE system through visits and networking with participating laboratories during the second year.
