Job Description

UHealthSolutions, Inc. is seeking to hire a Nuclear Medicine Technologist within The Federal Medical Center in Butner, NC. FMC Butner is a United States federal prison in North Carolina for inmates of all security levels who have special health needs. It is part of the Butner Federal Correctional Complex (FCC Butner) and is operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP), a division of the United States Department of Justice. It is located near the Research Triangle area of Durham, Raleigh and Chapel Hill.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Prepare, administer, and measure radioactive isotopes in therapeutic, diagnostic, and tracer studies using a variety of radioscope equipment. Prepare stock solutions of radioactive materials and calculate doses to be administered by radiologist. Subject patients to radiation. Execute blood volume, red cell survival, and fat absorption studies following standard laboratory techniques.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Record, log, and monitor all radioactive materials.
  • Administer radiopharmaceuticals or radiation intravenously to detect or treat disease using radioscope equipment, under the direction of a physician.
  • Detect and map radiopharmaceuticals in patients’ bodies using a camera to produce photographic or computer images.
  • Produce a computer-generated or film image for interpretation by a physician.
  • Calculate, measure, and record radiation dosage or radiopharmaceuticals received, used, and disposed of, using a computer and following physician’s prescription.
  • Perform quality control checks on laboratory equipment or cameras.
  • Maintain and calibrate radioscope and laboratory equipment, including “flooding” the nuclear camera, calibrating the well and probe, and checking dose calibration equipment daily.
  • Dispose of radioactive materials and store radiopharmaceuticals following radiation safety procedures.
  • Process cardiac function studies, using a computer.
  • Prepare radiopharmaceuticals, adhering to safety standards that minimize radiation exposure to workers and patients.
  • Record and process results of procedures, label and review results for the Radiologist.
  • Record daily work area monitoring.
  • Perform weekly calibration with a bar phantom and administer wipes tests for removal of radioactive contamination.
  • Assist with clerical functions, including review of patient histories and records, sorting and filing, printing patient requests from BEMR, scheduling, and research.
  • Maintain a clean environment for all work areas.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Must pass pre-employment examination.
  • Background check and investigation required.
  • English proficiency required.
  • All other duties as required by contract.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
EDUCATION:

Graduate from an accredited education program in nuclear medicine technology; or be nationally certified as a Registered Medical Technologist or Registered Radiologic Technologist; or possess a Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree in physical or biological sciences with four (4) years of clinical NMT experience. Certification in Nuclear Medicine Technology by NMTCB or ARRT required.

  • Maintain North Carolina CEU requirements.
  • Work involves contact with patients of all ages and other healthcare staff.
  • Work may require lifting or pushing over 30 pounds, and carrying objects around 20 pounds.
  • Physical activities include walking, running, climbing, and bending.
  • Customer service and communication skills essential.
Additional Information:

As a UHealthSolutions employee at FCC Butner, compliance with all policies and regulations of both UHealthSolutions and the Federal Bureau of Prisons is required. Training will be provided. Employment is contingent upon approval for facility access, and completion of required background checks, drug testing, and training. You must maintain Federal Bureau of Prisons approval during employment. Questions or concerns about policies should be directed to your supervisor.

Appointment is subject to satisfactory completion of urinalysis, physical, and background investigation. All applicants are subject to NCIC and credit checks. Successful completion of the “Introduction to Correctional Techniques” training course is required. This position is test designated and subject to drug testing under the BOP Drug Free Workplace Plan.
