Job summary

Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a Special Materials Representative (SMR) to implement and manage the material control and accountability program. The role focuses on safeguarding nuclear materials, ensuring compliance with DOE and DOT regulations, and coordinating inventory controls while maintaining operational efficiency.

You will support material acquisition, transfer, shipping, and reporting abnormalities, with travel obligations for training.

Qualifications

  • Proof of U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain a Q-level security clearance.
  • Hazardous material shipper certification with emphasis on radioactive material.
  • Understanding of material controls and accountability operations principles.
  • Proficiency in MS Access and Excel.
  • Knowledge of nuclear and hazardous materials safety practices and disposal regulations.
  • Minimum 4-year college degree or equivalent experience in a science/health physics/nuclear/related field.
  • Strong written and spoken communication; ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Ability to manage documents and maintain thorough records.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain all aspects of the Tamper Indicating Device (TID) program from application to removal and tracking.
  • Prepare DOT shipping paperwork for onsite and offsite radioactive shipments and move radioactive material as required.
  • Participate in annual physical inventories of material balance areas.
  • Provide material accountability services including acquisition, transfer, shipping, and reporting abnormalities of nuclear material.
  • Travel for training is required.
