Job summary

Applied Atomics is seeking a Fuels Engineer to support the design, analysis, and development of the nuclear fuel system for our next generation reactor. As an early technical hire, you will work closely with our nuclear engineering team to evaluate commercial fuel designs, model fuel performance, and translate design data into internal decisions.

You will interface with external suppliers, navigate fabrication and QA constraints, and help qualify a FOAK core.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Nuclear Engineering or related field required.
• 4+ years of relevant industry experience with fuel systems.
• Experience with nuclear fuel behavior and materials under irradiation.
• Familiarity with fuel performance tools (BISON, FRAPTRAN, MOOSE, FAST).
• Understanding of neutronics and thermal-hydraulics related to fuel performance.
• Strong analytical, communication, and documentation skills.

Responsibilities

• Support design of reactor fuel system geometry, cladding, and assembly geometries.
• Evaluate fuel thermal/mechanical behavior and failure modes.
• Conduct fuel performance analyses using validated models.
• Coordinate with fuel suppliers for data, constraints, and QA.
• Develop tests, gather data, and document design decisions.
