Job summary

Duke Energy seeks a Nuclear Engineer II to support mechanical and civil engineering design, project coordination, and regulatory compliance within a nuclear facility. You will evaluate design alternatives, develop specifications, and assist with field installations.

Responsibilities include performing analyses, preparing licensing screens, and updating design bases and drawings. Occasional travel and on-call rotations are required.

Qualifications

  • ABET-accredited B.S. in Engineering is required.
  • Nuclear Engineer II: minimum 2 years of engineering experience.
  • Minimum 1 year of nuclear experience.
  • Able to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access.
  • Must be able to work in the U.S. without immigration sponsorship.
  • Willingness to work extended hours and on-call rotations.
  • Preferred: B.S. in Civil or Mechanical Eng. from ABET accredited program; 3–4 years in utilities/EPC.
  • Preferred: PE exam and background in nuclear design processes and related codes.

  • Support mechanical/civil engineering design and project coordination.
  • Research engineering issues, evaluate alternatives, and present recommendations.
  • Develop or revise design/procurement specifications and technical requirements documents.
  • Develop scope, installation, and testing requirements for design changes.
  • Perform or support stress, structural, dynamic/seismic, and hydraulic design.
  • Provide field installation support and respond to design changes via work orders.
  • Develop or revise complex engineering calculations.
  • Develop licensing screens and evaluations.
  • Revise site design basis documents, drawings, and regulatory docs.
  • Specify vessels, heat exchangers, pumps, valves, rotating equipment, and other process equipment.
  • Monitor project schedules and budgets; provide weekly status updates.
  • Plan, organize, estimate, schedule, and monitor work activities.
  • Conduct plant system walkdowns and provide field support for modification implementation.
  • Work from remote and onsite locations, averaging 3 full onsite days per week after onboarding.

Job description

  • Support mechanical/civil technical design and project coordination
  • Research engineering and design issues, evaluate alternatives, and present recommendations
  • Develop or revise design/procurement specifications and technical requirements documents
  • Develop scope, technical basis, installation, and testing requirements for engineering design changes
  • Perform or support stress, structural, dynamic/seismic, steel, and concrete design
  • Support assigned engineering design changes through work order reviews, corrective action assignments, and field installation support
  • Develop or revise complex engineering calculations
  • Develop licensing screens and evaluations
  • Revise site design basis documents, design drawings, and regulatory documents
  • Specify vessels, heat exchangers, pumps, valves, rotating equipment, and other process equipment
  • Understand project schedules and budgets and provide weekly project status updates
  • Plan, organize, estimate, schedule, and monitor work activities
  • Support company goals and represent the company professionally
  • Conduct plant system walkdowns and provide field support for modification implementation
  • Work from remote and onsite locations, reporting to the assigned Duke Energy facility as required, averaging 3 full onsite workdays per regular workweek after onboarding
Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering
  • Nuclear Engineer II: minimum of 2 years of engineering experience
  • Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience
  • Must meet minimum ANSI requirements identified within Nuclear Operating Fleet Administrative Procedure AD-LS-ALL-0011 and Regulatory Guide 1.8 Personnel Qualifications
  • Able to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access
  • Must be able to work lawfully in the U.S. without employment-based immigration sponsorship, now or in the future
  • Willingness to work extended hours, schedule changes, emergency callouts, and on-call rotations
  • Must be Fit for Duty for applicable ERO responsibilities
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment as needed
  • Occasional overnight travel
  • Preferred: Bachelor of Science in Civil or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • Preferred: 3–4 years related experience within a utility company or EPC firm
  • Preferred: Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam and passed Professional Engineer Exam
  • Preferred: Background in heat exchangers, pumps, valves, rotating equipment, thermodynamics, heat transfer, hydraulics, project management, structural analysis, nuclear design processes, ASME/AISC/ACI codes, and engineering software including Mathcad, AutoCAD, GT Strudl, ANSYS, AutoPipe, Caesar II, SuperPipe, SolidWorks, or equivalent 3D modeling software
  • Strong written, oral, and communication skills
  • Ability to independently research engineering and design issues, evaluate alternatives, and present recommendations
  • Experience with Windows, email, Microsoft Office, and engineering products
