Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s School of Aviation seeks qualified applicants for anticipated Flight Program positions. These are 9‑month, non‑tenure track appointments with an August 11, 2026 start date.

Provide flight instruction to students in Aviation Flight, perform inspections, and maintain training records. Lead as Acting Chief Flight Instructor and supervise Flight Operations, including night/weekend duties. Additional duties may be assigned as needed.

Qualifications

Job description

The College of Health and Human Sciences at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is seeking qualified applicants for anticipated positions within the School of Aviation’s Flight program. These are 9-month, non-tenure track appointments. Effective date of appointment is August 11, 2026.

Provide individual flight instruction to students enrolled in Aviation Flight courses, including preflight/postflight inspection and evaluation as well as maintenance of training records of assigned students. Conduct FAA stage and graduation check flights. Serve as Acting Chief Flight Instructor, as Supervisor of Flight Operations (Duty Officer), including night and weekend operations. Function as a “Team Leader”, including the supervision and evaluation of Flight Instructors (Team Members). Oversee the course of training for one of five FAR Part 141 training courses. Serve on department committees as requested. Assist faculty as needed in teaching aeronautical and aircraft systems classes offered in the Aviation Flight program. Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief Flight Instructor and/or the Director of the School of Aviation.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree by date of hire. Commercial Pilot Certificate, FAA Certified Flight Instructor-Airplane and Instrument (CFII), Second Class Medical Certificate. Meet the applicable requirements of FAR 141.36 (b), (c) and (d). Must meet requirements of FAR 141.36(a)(3) and FAR 141.36(a)(4) within two attempts, within three months of date of hire. Must have 1,750 hours total flight time. Must have 1 year as a company check pilot, company check airman, or a position involving the regular evaluation of pilots.

Preferred Qualifications:

Designated Pilot Examiner [DPE] Minimums. Master’s Degree. University flight program experience as Assistant Chief Flight Instructor. Multi-Engine Instructor. [Appointment will be at the Assistant Instructor level with a Bachelor’s degree and at the Assistant Lecturer level with a Master’s degree.]
