Job summary

Scion Nonprofit Staffing has been engaged to conduct a search for an experienced Controller on behalf of a highly established organization supporting philanthropic and private foundation activities. This on-site, full-time role is based in Menlo Park, CA, reporting to the Senior Accounting Director and supervising two staff.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA preferred.
• 10+ years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including 4+ years at Controller level within private grant-making and/or operating foundations.
• Demonstrated expertise in nonprofit GAAP, financial statement preparation, and private foundation accounting and compliance.
• Strong working knowledge of IRC Chapter 42 and Form 990-PF or equivalent exempt-organization tax experience.
• Experience with international grantmaking, expenditure responsibility, or equivalency determinations, and investment accounting.

Responsibilities

• Own month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close, including journals, reconciliations, and GAAP nonprofit statements.
• Lead financial reporting, cash forecasting, budgeting, and budget-to-actual analysis with strong internal controls.
• Manage private foundation tax/regulatory requirements, including Form 990-PF and IRC Chapter 42 rules.
• Oversee grants accounting and compliance, including ASC 958 and multi-year grants.
• Serve as primary liaison for annual financial statement audits and coordinate reporting.
• Supervise and develop finance staff while improving processes and automating workflows.
