Job summary

Loaves & Fishes Community Services seeks a Controller to guide financial operations from Naperville. The role supervises one staff accountant and supports meetings with occasional night or weekend hours.

The successful candidate will oversee month-end close, budgeting, cash management, and GAAP compliance across five entities, while partnering with departments on financial analysis and reporting.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field required.
• Minimum 5 years of accounting experience, preferably in nonprofit sector.
• Strong knowledge of GAAP, fund accounting, and nonprofit reporting standards; QuickBooks Online experience required.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
• Experience supervising and developing staff.
• Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines while handling multiple items.

Responsibilities

• Prepare monthly and fiscal year-end close financial reports for leadership, Finance Committee, and Board of Directors for five entities.
• Oversee annual budget, reforecast, and variance analysis.
• Manage cash flow to ensure available cash and optimize investments.
• Oversee operational and financial performance metrics processes.
• Manage banking operations including deposits, checks, and reconciliations.
• Ensure internal controls and GAAP compliance with grant requirements.
• Oversee fund accounting and reporting of restricted assets.
• Coordinate with Advancement for development/fundraising records reconciliation.
• Lead external audit coordination and 990 tax filing preparation.
• Supervise and mentor staff accountant.
• Collaborate with Operations, Programs, and Advancement on budgeting and ad hoc analyses.
