Job summary

Ada S. McKinley Community Services seeks a Controller to lead the finance team and govern core accounting operations in a Chicago-based, mission-driven nonprofit.

The role reports to the CF&AO and will oversee month-end close, A/P, A/R, and revenue recognition across government and private funding streams. Candidates should bring 6–8 years of accounting leadership in nonprofit or regulated environments, GAAP and fund accounting expertise, and experience guiding ERP selection and implementation.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; CPA and/or MBA a plus.
• 6-8 years of progressive accounting experience with leadership responsibility.
• Nonprofit/behavioral health or regulated environments preferred.
• GAAP knowledge, fund accounting, and government funding familiarity.
• Experience with ERP systems and system implementations.
• Strong communication and ability to present financial information to non-finance stakeholders.
• Staff development and change leadership experience.

Responsibilities

• Own and drive the monthly close process, ensuring timely and accurate reporting.
• Oversee core accounting functions: general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and expenditure cycle.
• Oversee audit processes across multiple programs and funding sources.
• Lead the evaluation, selection, and implementation of a new ERP system.
• Partner with leadership to provide clear financial insights and strategic support.
