Job summary

The Daniel Murphy Scholarship Fund (DMSF) is seeking a Chief Operating Officer to guide operations, fundraising operations, and organizational growth from our downtown Chicago office. You will partner with the CEO, oversee finance, HR, data, contracts, and vendor management, mentor a 2–3 person Development team, and help advance our mission supporting Murphy Scholars.

This role demands strategic leadership in a fast-paced nonprofit with a $6M+ budget and a hybrid work arrangement.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
• 5+ years of nonprofit leadership in operations, administration, development, or similar.
• Proven success leading multiple operations functions.
• Direct supervisory experience managing teams.
• Experience supporting executive leadership and communications.
• Experience in fundraising strategy, donor engagement, and events.

Responsibilities

• Provide leadership and oversight of organizational operations, systems, and processes.
• Lead implementation of strategic priorities with CEO and leadership team.
• Develop and improve operational systems and internal communications.
• Oversee goal tracking, accountability, project management, and cross-department coordination.
• Build a culture of clarity, collaboration, urgency, professionalism, and continuous improvement.
• Lead staff culture, development, and organizational health initiatives.
• Partner with the CEO on board prep, planning, and special projects.
• Identify operational challenges and recommend solutions.
• Lead, mentor, and develop the Development team (2-3 direct reports).
